Traditional Newari tattoo

Traditional Newari tattooing, natively known as "Lha: Chhwo", is a deeply rooted cultural practice primarily found among the Newar community of the Kathmandu Valley. These tattoos serve as profound permanent markers of identity, social status, spiritual milestones, and cultural pride. Here are the defining elements of this ancient art form: 1. Visual Patterns and Placement Geometric & Intricate Designs: Newari tattoos are characterized by complex, dense geometric and symmetrical patterns. Common motifs resemble detailed lacework, mesh netting, or stylized artistic representations of nature and spiritual symbols. Placement: They are traditionally placed on highly visible parts of the lower limbs and arms, such as the ankles, lower calves, wrists, and forearms. 2. Traditional Technique Hand-Tapped Application: Long before modern tattoo machines reached Nepal, these markings were meticulously applied using manual, hand-tapping techniques. Lifelong Durability: Using natural, dark pigments, the ink was deeply embedded into the skin. While they soften and fade into dark grey or greenish-blue hues over many decades, they beautifully weather the aging process, retaining their distinct patterns even as the skin wrinkles. 3. Cultural and Spiritual Significance In Newar tradition, these tattoos are far more than mere decoration. They hold significant spiritual weight: Passage into the Afterlife: A prevalent cultural belief holds that when a person passes away, they leave all worldly possessions behind. However, the tattoos etched onto their skin remain with them, serving as a spiritual currency or a protective shield to ensure a safe journey into the afterlife. Symbol of Maturity: For women, receiving these intricate markings often coincided with major life milestones, symbolizing strength, beauty, and their integrated role within the community.

the little version of myself in the photos.

Being a tattoo artist today is not just one thing. We have to be artists, content creators, marketers, handle finances, draw… all at the same time. And sometimes, in the middle of all that, I feel so small — just like the little version of myself in the photos. The pressure is there, and it’s real. But nothing is more rewarding than seeing a drawing that was born in my mind come to life on someone’s skin. A project that I imagined, envisioned, and designed becoming something permanent on someone who trusted me to make it happen. I set up my workstation, take a deep breath, and every day I hope to leave a piece of my art on someone’s skin. ✨๐Ÿงก #tattoo #mandala #geometric#jpmarts #jpmartsfacebook #needlestattooinc
